This online exhibition Bound by Tradition: Physical Bibliography of East Asian bookbinding explores the physical bibliography of traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean stab-binding books, highlighting paper production and book binding structure.
Stab-binding book is also called side-stitched, thread-binding, or pouch binding. The stab-binding represents the last stage in the history of traditional East Asian bookbinding, which was predominant in the 14th to 17th centuries.
This exhibit includes 14 items held in Asia collections, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. With the valuable and rare items, this exhibit features the unique properties of bookbinding of each China, Korea and Japan. Enjoy the art and science of stab-binding of East Asia. |
